Sorting hat

Harry Potter was a Hatstall. The Sorting Hat found he could do well in either Slytherin or Gryffindor.

A Hatstall was an archaic term for a student of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry whose Sorting took more than five minutes because the Sorting Hat found him or her to have a personality equally suited to two different Hogwarts Houses. The Sorting Hat sometimes took the student's personal preference into consideration in order to break such a tie.

True Hatstalls were rare, occurring around once every fifty years, but near Hatstalls may have been more common.

Known HatstallsEdit

  • Albus Potter — The Sorting Hat found he could do well in either Gryffindor or Slytherin before choosing the latter.
  • Louis Weasley — The Sorting Hat found he could do well in either Gryffindor or Hufflepuff because Louis has a courage inherited by his father, but the Sorting Hat just taking for granted the request of the boy and choosing the latter.

Known Near HatstallsEdit

  • Hermione Granger — The Sorting Hat spent nearly four minutes trying to decide between Gryffindor and Ravenclaw, and "seriously considered" Ravenclaw, but ultimately went with Gryffindor

The two argued silently for "a long time" before the Hat finally got its way and declared him a Gryffindor.
  • Regulus Black — The Sorting Hat spent nearly four minutes trying to decide between Hufflepuff, Gryffindor and Slytherin, and just considering only his last name to complete the sorting.
  • Scorpius Malfoy — The Sorting Hat was determined to place him in Gryffindor, due to the great courage and determination to prove that Scorpius had, but had come to consider Slytherin due the Scorpius' last name.
  • Rose Weasley — The Sorting Hat spent nearly three minutes trying to decide between Gryffindor and Ravenclaw, and "seriously considered" Ravenclaw, but ultimately went with Gryffindor.

Harry Potter- One of the closest hatstalls in his year. The hat strongly debated between Gryffindor and Slytherin but because of Slytherins reputation and Harry's preference he was out in Gryffindor
